WoW (Wonders of Waste) Bags
Presentation by Helen Mitchell at Tawnytaskin Centre on Tuesday 26th November at 8pm
Boyle ICA are delighted to welcome back Helen to the Tawnytaskin Centre. Many people from Boyle and surrounding areas have purchased a WoW bag in the past from one of our sales pitches at the Boyle Show, King House Christmas Market or Carrick on Shannon Christmas Market.
Helen is a layminster from Dublin who has worked in the Philippines for over 15 years. Her day consists of everything from involvement in a literacy project for street children, to homework clubs for kids in squatter settlements, to working as an advocate for tribal people. Helen established the WoW bag project in 2006 as a means of creating jobs and incomes for families. Using 100% recycled plastic drink pouches the women are transforming waste into practical and beautiful bags. The group make over 2,000 bags per year ranging in price from €3 to €60. As a result of their enterprise the women earn a ‘fair-trade’ wage and have health and social security rights. They are learning administration and management skills and computer skills. An extra bonus is that they are also helping the environment as waste management is still in its infancy in the Philippines.
This is a free event and anyone interested in meeting and chatting with Helen is very welcome on the night. A donation box will be available and bags will be on sale. Since Helen’s first visit in November 2017, Boyle ICA, with huge support from the people of Boyle, have sold over €2,500 worth of bags. All money is banked directly to the project and this money goes a long way to supporting families in the Philippines.
We look forward to welcoming you.
