Getting your garden ready for summer
The summer holidays are just around the corner and we’re all looking forward to some time with our feet up on a sun lounger, enjoying being out in the garden soaking up the warmth. Get your garden summer ready now so it’s looking at its most gorgeous just when you’re out in it the most. Carry out these simple spruce-ups before summer starts in earnest and you can put your feet up with the satisfaction of a job well done.
• Give the lawn a mow and control any persistent lawn weeds like clover, dandelions and daisies. We have all you need here at the garden centre.Keep the edges nice and trim too as this really sets off the garden.
Hoe off your weeds on a dry day before they can set seed. Hand weed persistent perennials like bindweed or spot treat carefully with weed killer.
• Fill any gaps with in-flower beauties for instant colour – you can pick up summer flowering plants including roses, dahlias, Peruvian lilies and rudbeckias from the garden centre to drop in to your borders right away.
Add a slow release fertiliser to containers, Make a few holes in the compost of containers and trickle in some slow-release fertiliser granules. This will ensure your container plants, especially more permanent ones, are kept nourished for the rest of the growing season. Pick off any dead leaves or flowers at the same time and treat them all to a good soak.
• Don’t forget your houseplants Give your hard-working houseplants a much appreciated boost by repotting. Sometimes they will go back into the same pot if you just crumble away the old loose compost and replace with new multi-purpose. Remove any dust from the leaves and prune or trim if needed.
