“Damage estimated at over half-a-million pounds was caused to the premises of the Roscommon Herald, Boyle.
The blaze, which broke out half-an-hour after the staff of 50 reported for work, completely destroyed the main building in a very short time.
Fire brigades from Boyle and Carrick-on-Shannon concentrated on preventing the fire spreading to two new wings of the premises and to adjoining private houses and business premises.
The paper, established 106 years ago, is jointly owned by Mr. John T O’Hanrahan, County Surgeon for Roscommon and Mr. Patrick J Nerney …”
