TREASURE HUNT St Stephen’s Day Charity Treasure Hunt and Auction. This
annual fun event for charity will commence at 2.30pm in Lough Key Forest and
Activity Park Boyle with a walking treasure hunt in the park grounds. Completed
sheets to be handed in at Clarke’s Bar and Restaurant, St Patrick’s Street Boyle
where winners will be announced and the auction will take place. Please bring
auction items to Clarke’s on the day.
CRACKERS! Let your Christmas creativity loose this month with a
children’s craft workshop organised by Úna Bhán Tourism. Eva, our regular craft
worker, will run the workshop on Saturday, December 22nd to show children from
age six upwards how to make a set of six beautiful, personalised Christmas
crackers. All materials are provided and participants can take home everything
they have made. The cost is €15 per child. Booking is essential—places are
limited and usually fill up quickly, so if you are interested, don’t delay. Ring

SANTA’S HERE Santa and his reindeer will take up their usual place
underground at the Arigna Mining Experience on Friday, December 14th from 12
-6pm and on Saturday December 15th and Sunday December 16th from 12-5pm. They
will return the following weekend, too. There will be entertainment for
children, including face painting, story telling and other activities. Contact

CANCER SUPPORT The first meeting of a new support group for cancer
patients and their families gets underway at the Family Life Centre on Friday,
December 14th at 8pm. Thereafter, meetings will be every second Friday in the

PHOTO WORKSHOP A photography tutorial on the
camera's Mode Dial, led by Tony Murphy, is planned for the next meeting of Boyle Camera
Club on Wednesday, December 12th, from 8pm until 9.30pm, in King House, Boyle.
The theme for members’ photographs will be ‘Pets’. Photographs will be shown to
members and comments invited. There are now almost 60 paid up members of the
club. New members are welcome. The only requirements, apart from an interest in
developing your photographic skills, are access to a digital camera (compact or
SLR), plus basic computer skills and an email address. Meetings are held on the
second Wednesday of the month and attendees have agreed to pay €1 each at the
door as a contribution towards the cost of the room hire. Annual membership fees

YOUNG EXPLORERS A Young Nature Explorers Club at the National Parks
and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Education Centre, based in Ballinafad, is planned
for the New Year if there is enough interest. It will be a club for young
people in the local community aged from 6 to 12 years, meeting once a month in
the NPWS Education Room at Ballinafad, with some additional days during school
holidays. Parents or guardians should contact 071 9666 704 for further details
about times and events. A Family Events Day takes place on Friday January 4th
2008 at the NPWS. The first session is from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, the second
session from 4pm to 6pm (all activities are repeated). The day features a
Puppet Show, Make a Bird Box, Introduction to Bird Watching in our New Hide and
Nature Games to Play. Workshops are: a) Senior for 2nd to 6th class age group
- Make your own bird box to take home with you and b) For all ages - helping

children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of the
session. Also on the agenda is an evening talk by Lorcan O'Toole which will
take place on Tuesday, January 15th 2008. This will start at 7.45pm and will be
about "Irish Birds of Prey". Lorcan is Project Manager for the Golden Eagle
Re-Introduction Programme in Glenveagh National Park in Donegal.
SINGERS NIGHT There is a monthly music night at Wynne’s pub in Main
Street, Boyle, on Saturday, December 15th. Everyone is welcome, especially
singers.
CHRISTMAS CEILI Come and enjoy your Christmas Night Out in

ART EXHIBITION Dermot O’Hara’s Art Exhibition in Boyle Library
continues until Saturday, December 15th. The Exhibition can be viewed during the

CHRISTMAS BASH Members of the Results Gym in Carrick Road, Boyle –
and there are more than 400 of them – have been invited to a Christmas party in
the Moylurg. Entertainment will be from Michael Leonard from 9pm, with DJ
Ritchie finishing off the evening. The fun gets under way on Friday, December
14th. A draw will take place for a year’s free membership. Meanwhile, salsa
classes, Pilates, aerobics and hip hop dancing for teens continue at the gym

CHARITY CALENDAR Copies of the stunning new Boyle calendar produced
by Stewarts Oil are selling well. The calendar of pictures from around the area
was commissioned by Stewarts Oil from professional photographer Mike Bunn. The
‘Love Where You Live’ 2008 calendar, which is in full colour, has beautiful
scenic images from around the three counties connected to Boyle: Roscommon,
Leitrim and Sligo. The calendar costs €7.50, with €5 from each sale going to the
Mayo Roscommon Hospice. It is available to customers of Stewarts Oil or can be
purchased at outlets in the town, including the Úna Bhán Tourism Craft Shop in
the grounds of King House.
CHRISTMAS SONG There is still time to hear the Christmas song by
Boyle musician/songwriter, Frankie Simon. The song, called “An Irish Christmas”,
was composed, arranged and produced by himself. It is available on the
internet as a free download, for a limited period. There is also an option on
the site to make a donation with the proceeds of any donations going towards the

WRAPPED UP Did you know that for the month of December, you can have
your purchases from the Úna Bhán Tourism Craft Shop gift wrapped? This service
offers shoppers the opportunity to have their gift individually presented in
seasonal wrapping paper and finished with festive ties and ribbon. Prices
(dependent on the size and finish required) start from €2-50 each. Meanwhile,
pottery from Sligo woman Lynda Gault makes an appearance in the Úna Bhán Shop in
time for Christmas. Lynda’s distinctive ceramics include a range of hand
crafted, personalised mugs and bowls for children, which can include the name of
your choice. The personalised items are made to order (get in early for
Christmas!) but there is also a range of other items, including jugs, bud vases,
a table lamp and salad bowls on display ready to take home and enjoy. Call in to

CHRISTMAS CAKES On Wednesday (December 12th) Sharon Sweeney from
Cannaboe Confectionary will be giving a Christmas cake decoration evening class
at King House. Learn how to create a special Christmas cake and decorate
seasonal novelties. Admission is €10 and includes a complimentary glass of wine

CHILDREN OF AFRICA Thank you for taking the time to talk to the
volunteers at our table at the King House Craft Fair recently and for
contributing generously to the Christmas Card Donations which raised €1,500. We
hope to have a news story ready shortly to update people on the progress of the
project in Hazyview, Mpumalanga to build, support and sustain a caring and
educationally focused home for orphans and vulnerable children living in ‘child
headed’ families in South Africa.
