Garda dies after shooting in Castlerea, Co Roscommon
Colm Horkan, a garda detective died following a shooting incident in Castlerea, Co Roscommon before midnight on Wednesday 17th June. A man in his 40s has been arrested. It appears the detective’s official firearm was taken from him and he was shot a number of times with it.
• An RTE statement suggested that the Garda engaged with the man on Main Street, Castlerea.
“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
This death brings to 89 to the number of gardaí who have died while on active service for the force. Most of those killed were involved in road traffic incidents or died while trying to rescue others. At least 30 members of the force were either shot or violently killed.
