BOYLE LOCAL ART EXHIBITION 2010 – BOYLE ARTS FESTIVAL
Once
again, it is the time of year to remind all local artists, new artists, those
from further afield and those under 25 – that it is time to be thinking of your
entry to the BAF10 Boyle Open Art Exhibition. The exhibition runs this year
from Friday 23rd July until Saturday 31st July, throughout the Boyle Arts
Festival. Entries will be accepted in any medium, to a maximum of 3 per person.
Last year’s exhibition was well supported as always, with many works sold. We
anticipate another excellent show, exhibits for which will be selected by an
anonymous panel. Handing-in of entries will be on Friday 2nd July 4pm to 6pm
and/ or Saturday 3rd July from 4pm to 6pm in Church of Ireland, Parochial
School, Military Road, Boyle (opposite Family Life Centre). Conditions of Entry
and an Entry Form are attached, if you have any queries about the exhibition you
can ring us at 071 96 63033 between 9am and 5pm. We are looking forward to
seeing you and your new work on handing in day.
WORKING TOGETHER TO BUILD A
BETTER BOYLE
As a result of a very large attendance of a recent meeting in
Dalys on Building a Better Boyle, three Sub Teams have been formed. The next
meetings will be held in Dalys Lounge on the following dates; Retail, Business
Development & Innovation on Tuesday 4th May at 6.30pm and the Tourism, Arts
& Heritage Group will meet on Wednesday 12th May at 7pm in Dalys. Anyone
who is still interested in getting involved but for one reason or another didn’t
attend a previous meeting, you’re still not too late, feel free to come along to
whichever group you would be most interested in, or to all three and see what’s
happening. A recent gathering was as a result of a Chamber of Commerce
initiative distributing a survey in town and due to the large response and
wealth of ideas received, the social gathering was scheduled. The enthusiasm and
abundance of ideas and energy is evidence that working together is the way
forward to Build a Better Boyle! We thank everyone who took the time to attend
and support this initiative and hope you all will be back on board for the next
sessions.
SPRING INTO SUMMER AT THE BOYLE FARMERS MARKET
Spring has sprung
and now we are at that time of year where we need colour around us, so why not
drop into the Boyle Country Market and pick up some vegetable plant, potting
plants, shrubbery and fresh flowers. Look out for our special offer boards which
are at all entrances to the Market, as well as this we have a vast array of
stalls catering for all needs, organic meat and poultry, fresh fish and
shellfish, breads cakes, cheeses, fresh vegetables and fruit, Gluten and Wheat
free breads and cakes, honey, teas, ceramic ware, art in glass, jams, marmalade
and preserves, designed candles, hand made knitwear and fresh organic free range
eggs to name but a few. Fruit & Vegetables are part of a balanced diet that
helps us stay healthy. They contain essential vitamins, minerals &
potassium; they reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and certain cancers and
are an excellent source of the dietary fibre that helps maintain a healthy gut,
thus preventing constipation and other digestive system discomforts and
problems. Minimal food miles for these products mean you are reducing your
carbon footprint, as well as eating healthily by choosing local food in season.
The market is held in the grounds of King House in Military Road, Boyle, every
Saturday from 10am until 2pm. Look at www.unabhan.net for more details or call
071 9663033 or look at our new face-book page facebookboyle@gmail.com

BUSY PHOTOGRAPHERS
Boyle Camera Club activities continue apace,
as members gear up for a series of outings and meetings, plus the annual
exhibition in the Library during Boyle Arts Festival in July. A working party is
currently being set up to organise this year's exhibition. Meanwhile, the
deadline for the monthly motivation is on Tuesday, May 4th, a week ahead of the
club's meeting in the Royal Hotel, Boyle. The April motivation, set to inspire
members to take more pictures, is 'Nightscapes'. The speaker for the May 11th
meeting will be Tony Geoghegan, who makes a welcome return to the club to talk
about taking portrait photographs. There will also be slideshows of the two most
recent photo-shoots, one to Cavan County Museum and another to the Marble Arch
Caves. The talk about picture framing due to take place at the April meeting
will now be re-scheduled for later in the year, after the speaker, Michael
Ewing, was unable to attend at the last minute due to a bereavement. An outing
is planned to Sligo Races on May 9th and a visit to the bluebell woods near
Knockvicar is promised, details will be on the website. The annual weekend away

BOYLE BADMINTON
The Connaught League Finals took place in the
Galway Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday 25th April, Boyle had two teams representing
Roscommon in Division 2 and in Division 6. The Division 6 team had first to
meet Loughrea however play just didn't go in Boyle's favour on the day and they
were eliminated at the semi-final stage. Congratulations to the whole team on
getting through to represent in Connaught, putting in huge effort all year and
emerging with a second County Title under their belt - not a bad season's work!
The Division 2 team played against Cortoon from Galway in what was a rerun of
the Galway League Final. Coming in to the mixed doubles Boyle had taken two
games, men's singles and men's doubles and with first mixed not going in Boyle's
favour they had it all to do when taking to the court for the last two games.
They were outstanding, a lesson in how to play mixed. Boyle took both games in
two sets. As always Cortoon were worthy competitors but in the end Boyle took a
fantastic 4-3 win to emerge Connaught Champions. They go forward to represent
Connaught in the BI All Ireland League Finals, Division 2, in Baldoyle, Dublin
on 16th May. Congratulations to Padraic, Sean, John, Marcin, Ruth, Bernie &
Mandy.
